Description Abasto gained its own identity in 1893, due to the opening of the Central Fruit Market. The population, mostly made up by immigrants, settled in Conventillos (tenements), near the market. Brothels and pubs, where friends met, appeared soon after. Tango, horse racing and women were the ruling topics in these places. When you think about Abasto you sense Carlos Gardel and Tango, the typical porteño coffe- bar, the characteristic house fronts, painted with the fileteado technique, the modern mall and the old theatres. Here, Past and Present merge, resulting in a unique spot in Buenos Aires. Photogallery Demos | Audioguide Abasto [demo mapa] | English Español Italiano |
